97 Toyota Camry drive is neutral?

Asked by JiminiePabo May 22, 2020 at 10:59 PM about the 1997 Toyota Camry LE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I'm having an issue with my transmission.
Park is Park, reverse is reverse, neutral is neutral, DRIVE IS
NEUTRAL, D2 is D. However, if I put my car in D2 and drive
for about 5 seconds, I can stop and place the car in drive
and continue about my day like nothing happened until i
need to park or reverse, then I must reenact the scene.
Someone help?

check the linkage for a worn bushing, or the valve body or solenoids in the transmission need attention. How many miles on the transmission and when was it last serviced? For your age vehicle it is not uncommon for the transmission to need servicing or a rebuild.
