How many relays are there in the fuel pump electronics? Where are they?
Asked by dfpotter Jul 29, 2017 at 03:14 PM about the 1998 Toyota Camry LE
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
Car cranks but will not fire at all.
If I spray starting fluid into air intake and it fires right up and runs.until the fluid burns up.
If I connect the fuel pump up directly to the battery the car starts and runs fine.

I believe Toyota Calls their FP Relay a ....Circuit Opening Relay....usually located under hood Relay Fuse Box. The cover of this Fuse/Relay box should have fuse and relay ID and Location. Let us know progress.
I found the position for the relay you are talking about. It is labeled CIR OPN, the only problem is the there is no relay in the opening. What do you think now? Dan
My guess is Toyota has integrated that relay into the circuit board of that box. Do you see any electrical connections where a relay may plug in?
There is a female socket that is labeled CIR OPN, but there is no relay in it. The only relay I can find is the EFI and I am sure it is good.
What is the history on this vehicle? Are we sure a relay was Never in this location? OR...this may be a test point to test the relay which has been moved inside the vehicle...driver side...under dash.? Without a wiring diagram of this circuir...we can only guess as to what Toyota did with this relay. Look for a fuse...relay box under the driver side dash and see if a COPN relay is indicated.
Found nothing with any relation. I have only had the car for a few days and it only ran on it's drive home with a short stop for fuel. Everything was great, parked it in the drive and the next day the world crashed down. Got in the car and the key would not turn. Kept pulling the wheel to the left trying to get it to unlock, used a bunch of bad language I heard on TV, finally it unlocked. So now it cranked over and over and over with no response WE ARE STILL CRANKING You have read the things I have done. Please feel free to say, BUY AMERICAN.
OK...interesting History. There may be a Security/Anti-theft issue present. Do you have an extra/spare key for this vehicle? When the engine ran....did you notice any warning lights on or flashing?
Thanks for your help. I don't recall any lights but that don't mean there were none. There was an issue with the battery cables being loose. When I stopped for gas on the way home she did not fire back up. Found the ground cable was snug but not tight. Gave it some pressure down and a quarter turn to tighten and we were back on the road. No idea if this was a part of the theft system issue or not but I am working on that now. Dan
OK....however....I am still puzzled by the fact that the vehicle seems to operate correctly when you hot wire the Fuel Pump. Let's see if we can find a way to test that FP Relay...where ever it may be located.
I am sending an attachment that shows the plug at the fuel pump. It shows where there is current going with the key on. Pins 1 an 2 are where I must hot wire to run the pump.
Seems to me one of those wires pictured goes to the FP...COP...relay. without a wiring diagram for this vehicle ....well....it is a crap shoot. The other thing one must consider is the Computer on this vehicle controls...turns on and off the FP relay. Further testing requires a wiring diagram. It may cost a few $$$$ for same. If you are inclined to keep and repair this vehicle yourself....consider a $25.00 investment to Alldata DIY which will allow access to tech info on your make model year.
Just a passing thought. Do you have one of these under hood left side?
Regarding the above photo....that is Diagnostic Connector #1. Using a FUSED Jumper Wire.....connecting the FP to B+ should run the FP. Get back with results.
Thanks for trying but I can't find such an animal like that under the hood. I do believe it was a Canadian made car if that helps. I also think someone may have removed the battery before I first tryid to start it with no response from the fuel pump.
OK....well.....if we are still intending to diagnose the fuel pump circuit...we need a wiring diagram and parts locator to continue. The testing point requires we find the FP relay and test the circuit with a Digital Volt Meter. I believe that relay has been integrated into a circuit board and is now a Electronic device...not a mechanical device used in the past. So...further internet searches should include your make model year and Integration Relay. I'll get back with results.
Google ...PDF Fuel Pump Control Circuit. Then choose the circuit for the 2AZ-FE Engine. Get back with result.
Ha that was a great address and between it and your help I struck GOLD. It was as simple as swapping out a FAN relay with the CIR OPN Relay and she fired right up. Not sure how many helpers I had but I sure thank you all very much. GREAT WORK, Dan
Uh Raa.....nice job. Curious....where the hell is this COPN relay?
Yes where did you find the relay? I have the same exact problem
Make... Model....Year? What is the problem with this vehicle?
i have the same problem, would just crank but wont start, running gas pump on its own 12v supply, vehicle would start. exchange cicuit opening relay with the horn relay because both relays are exactly the same, the horn works with the opening circuit relay but vehicle still wouldnt start using the horn relay
Further diagnosis on my end will require Make....Model......Year.....Engine type.
