Turns off when starting
Asked by James Jun 14, 2017 at 10:59 PM about the 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier Sedan FWD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
When the key is turned to on or run the dash lights
up and everything looks normal and the fuel pump
goes, but when I turn it to start everything turns off
and the engine does not try to turn over. Checked
the battery voltage and it's good, checked fuses
and they are good. No DTC codes, but a few
sensors that were responding prior to this are
flagged as not working (o2, cat, and evap I think)

You got either a bad ground or loose ground or your starter is bad
Grounds in engine compartment are good, should I check the grounds inside behind the dash? Haven't gotten a chance to check the starter yet

Basically what you're saying is all the lights come on fuel pump comes on all the power comes on but as soon as you hit the key the car does nothing it does not spin over does no sound whatsoever normally that is a starter issue but check all your grounds make sure you're good there and if you are then you probably have a bad starter. Now if you had no power and it was totally blacked out then you probably would have a main fuse blown
Ok, on the starter there looks to be 3 connections, 2 of the same size and 1 smaller. I get battery voltage across the 2 connections of the same size but the smaller one I get nothing
Ok it is fixed, the issue was the positive terminal screw was too stripped to tighten it down all the way. I was gonna go get a new starter tomorrow and figured I might as well do this today. With new terminal bolts it started up no problem. Leading up to this I was getting anti theft issues and evap docs every so often. If eit her come back in the next couple of weeks I'll post an update. Thanks muffler man for the assistance!
