mold in gas cap compartment

I just bought a used 2002 toyota corolla.  I checked everything out but didn't
open the gas cover until after I bought it.  To my surprise there's mold in the
compartment.  Is this a normal thing or is this a sign of a flooded car.

Wash the area and dry it. You may want to mask the area off and paint it with some Rustoleum. Or you can use a cleaner wax on the affected area.
