My 1999 S 320 Mercedes

Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I need to get my oil pan gasket replaced, I took it to one shop that wanted to
charge an outrageous price and said I should not drive it even if nothing else
is wrong. I explained I have to get to work for a little bit and check on other
prices which I have, a shop with great ratings will charge me 600 less than the
first shop. Now basically am I ok to drive 20min back and forth to work?

How much oil u loosing thru the gasket leak? If not much I see no problem. Have u been driving a while already with oil leaking? Is it a squirting leak or a dripping. Why not check oil level first, bring it up to full, run it at home for a while accelersting it, etc, then shut off a while and check it again. How much did u loose. In other wards try to gauge it. I just had my car blow a seal by a sensor that poured out oil in a few minutee i hd to fix, but the same car has an oil leak elsewhere that drips a lil oil and at this point it can wait to be fixed. Is there a good reason the mechanic is telling you this?
Thanks Mark, yes I have been driving it. I'd haven't to refill it no less than 60 days or so, it drips but consistently a drop every 5 to 8 seconds.
Other danger, though it might b slight, is oil getting on hot exhaust pipe and catching fire, so b careful!
