Engine idle

Asked by Justjerry73 Nov 09, 2019 at 02:15 PM about the 2000 Ford F-150 XLT 4WD Extended Cab SB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 2000 f150  idle races when i come to a
stop. Its like it still wants to be going 50
down the rd. If I put it in park and wait it may
idle back down but not every time.
Sometimes i have to shut it off to get it to
idle normal again.  If i do shut it off, it does
not always want to start right up. Any
suggestions would be helpful. I have a
friendly that suggested the idle control
valves  so i got 5 for free from a junkyard
friend. 2 seemed to improve it a little while 2
made the problem worse and one seemed
about the same. Im not that cheap that I wnt
buy a new one. I just hate payn $50 for a
guess, an if that aint it then maybe its this
sensor or switch for another switch or
sensor.  Before ya know  it a person could
well spend $250 and have a bunch on new
sensors an switches or relay check valve
discombobulayors etc. etc.  It could be that
they still have a problem as well.  Really
need some EDUCATED guesses as I'm really
good at changing parts but i let the
diagnosis to the people who know how to do
it. Thanks guys or girls or whatever u may
identify with.

I would install a new idle control valve and look for vacuum leaks. If you rap on the idle control valve and the engine idles down you know the problem.
