Is the shift lever on the column? Some times you have to aid it all the way up to park, or turn the steering wheel a little bit while turning the key to off or lock position.

Mine is in the floor. I've tried ALL THE WAY in park, foot on brake, turnng steering wheel.......nothing seems to work. Guy at auto parts store said to reset the security system. Can't find how to do that!
Take your car to a GM dealer. It's likely that there is a safety recall for the ignition switch.

I had this same exact problem on my 2012 Chevy Traverse I bought less than a month ago. After trying everything like hitting the shifter, etc, I read to male sure the steering wheel is facing directly straight and try to turn the key off. This worked. I don't know why, I don't know what is wrong with the car. I will be taking it to a dealer to see about any recalled parts
