depends on the state...but that sure sounds like a Clogged Converter~ disconnect the exhaust and please flow test...and replace the clogged converter...(if this is the case) ...else, one might think of fuel flow....Fuel Filter...screen on the fuel pump...pressure gauge on the fuel rail (on the shroeder) valve will tell us the fuel pressure~ EGR valves can go defective and puff already combustion into the intake...those bastards, I say...check it out if they still use EGR valves...that might be the monster right there~!

it is very common for the VVT solenoids to fail in the 5.4L engine and when it happens this is exactly how the truck acts - I just recently experienced it with my F-150. After a quick engine scan I pinpoint the drivers side had failed but at $50ea on amazon.com I decided to replace both - it made a huge difference in performance and repaired the problem

I would get it scanned for codes. If the code points towards cam timing it is likely a VVT solenoid. If code is not cam timing related then I would check the fuel pressure.

I would suspect the converter especially if it runs OK at low speeds and low throttle but bogs when you step on the gas.
