Will a 99 dodge 318 work in a 96 truck with a 94 5 speed auto trans? Friend decided he wanted to get a different motor instead of rebuilding the one in the truck and came across a good price on a motor just not sure it will all mesh together.

sorry, could not find the 1500 on the list of applications, that does mean it won't work but I just could no place thay says it will

did some more research on lots of places that sell that engine and other sites that list applications, found nothing that specifically says it will. I think it has to do with all the different mix and match, a '96 with a '94 transmission wanting to put a '99 318 in the mix. It MIGHT work, but because of all of that, it just does not appear on any list. But I lean toward yes, it will, it seems you CAN mix and match a lot on those vehicles. Good luck my friend

all 94-2002 ram 1500s came with a 46RE 4 speed automatic transmission, in 2003 the 545RFE debuted which was a 5 speed or as chrysler called it a multi speed automatic. they were also available with a 5 & 6 speed manual. two V8s were offered with the 94-2002 rams a 5.2 318CID MPI V8 and a 5.9 360CID MPI V8.

To answer your question, yes the 99 engine will work in the 96 truck. If the 96 truck has a 360 and your bumping down to a 318 you need to take the torque converter out of the 99 truck as 360 equipped 1500s have a different torque converter than that of the 318.

Also take all the computers and the wiring harness, from the 1999 truck. they are the same body style, but their are a few subtle differences in the number of sensors as well as sensor placement.

Glad i could help. and like i said id make sure to take all the computers and the wiring harness off the newer truck and swap it into the older truck. 94-96 are the dark ages of OBD-II in 97 lots of changes were made and changes continue to be made all the way up to today. odds are if you use the harness out of the 96 truck youll end up missing some sensors that are needed.

I completely didn't even think about obd-I and obd-II. The guy had the computer but not the harness for the 99. Dan you seem quite knowledgeable on dodges. Know what could cause a clicking sound when pressing the brake? The brakes are maybe 6 months old replaced pads and rotors. Did it before and after brake job and still does it. Its on a 98 1500 360 auto

if its a 4x4 start checking Ujoints in the front end. due to the construction of the 4x4 unit hubs on the front of these trucks the front axles, and the front drive shaft are always spinning. if its not those check the dust covers. odds are your going to find that its more than likely a Ujoint some where. a good way to check is just take a long flat head screw driver and see how much play the yokes on the drive shafts and axle joints have. some play can be taken up by simply regreasing them, excessive play requires replacement.

That would make sense and I had planned on replacing all them before long. They aren't hard or expensive.

the hardest part on the front is pulling out the unitized hub bearings, 3 bolts 12 point 14mm, remove the tierod, and turn the spindle to either side to get to the two bottom bolts (its in a triangle formation 1 at the top w/two at the bottom) if you need to reuse it, i dont recommend using a slide hammer, I recommend using an air hammer with a flat hammering head against the flange of the bearing where it meets the spindle to spin it and break it free. after that use a chisel head to coax it out. as for the front drive shaft its self, i cant remember if they use a single or double cardan joint at the transfer case, if its the latter i recommend just buying a new drive shaft. Its very difficult to put the double cardan back together.
