Incorrect oil filter, 97 Ram 1500 5.2L
Asked by Racko Aug 01, 2020 at 03:52 PM about the 1997 Dodge RAM 1500 Laramie SLT 4WD

So at every auto store I go to no one can seem to
find the correct oil filter until I show them a picture
of what I have. What I was told is to bring the
original in for cross reference when changing. Has
anyone else heard of this before.

You don't need the exact same filter. Any quality filter that fits will work. That looks like a WIX filter to me.
It is the Wix, I didn’t know if there were changes to them from year to year. As every auto store can only see one filter that the truck should carry.
Oreillys claim the correct filter is a 51085, but you you can see hear this is half the size of what that is? Different thread and hole diameter.
Was the engine swapped out for something different?
I don’t believe so. Everything looks original from Factory. I bought it used about 8 months ago.
Nope, O'Reilly's is wrong!! I work for Napa and our filters are made by Wix. You have a Wix filter on there now. The correct Napa filter is a Napa Gold 1348, or a Napa ProSelect 21348. The Gold is the premium line and the ProSelect is the economy line. Hope that helps! Jim
NAPA is the best source for car parts and expertise. Our local NAPA owner sold out to O'Reilly's. Yuk.
Noticed alot of cars come with an oversized filter option. I use the oversized in mine other than that it's a super tiny one
Robert: For some reason my model will not take another size for scepter for the smaller version. Specifally the 51385 from Oreillys instead of the 51085 that it calls for. Just weird how every auto parts store provides the bigger although my truck will not take it.
