Ticking sound when accelerating

Asked by Jen197741 Dec 14, 2018 at 02:41 AM about the 1999 Dodge RAM 1500 ST RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1999 Dodge Ram 1500. We bought the
truck used this past spring and it has a newer
motor and transmission in it. We had to take the
exhaust off that was on it and replace it to pass
inspection. We have had nothing but problems
keeping the exhaust on and it has fallen off
multiple times. After this last time I noticed a
ticking noise, but only when accelerating and it
may not even be related to the exhaust falling off.
I’m just lost because it could be so many things.

I'd have the exhaust checked by someone else, cause the "ticking" noise can be the exhaust manifolds leaking, however, under the heading of...places to start...1) remove the air cleaner, open the throttle plates n with a flashlight, examine the floor of the intake, is it a swimming pool of oil? 2) check the heat shield on the passengers side engine mount; is it loose? 3) n prolly the most obvious, open the hood, put 'er in gear n listen-look for engine compartment problems.
