03' ticking
Asked by rickcutty Jan 26, 2016 at 07:25 AM about the 2003 Dodge RAM 1500 Laramie Quad Cab RWD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
This one's an 03' 168k. My friend melted down his 4.7. Got him a used one
(75k). The used one had a broken timing chain guide. I put in new chains,
guides, tensioners, and oil pump. Now it's ticking. When it starts, it runs
good. Good power. It threw me a cam out of time code, then a crank out of
time code. I rolled it through by hand, no problems. still ticking. I build old
school GM, don't have much experience with newer Dodge. About to put
another set of chains in it. HELP.

you bought a used engine without hearing it run- you threw the dice- sometimes that works out-

There is something you can try that worked for me when I had a tapping in engine add some Lucas Engine Oil Stabilizer. If you do decide to try it remove same amount of oil as on the bottle of stabilizer. Like I said no promises but it is worth a try.
Did you install the chain one tooth off?
The engine came from a bone yard I have used many times in the past. Never had any problems from their engines before.
My son had the same noise in his 2003. Started around 60,000. Now has 200,000 still ticking still running great.
