Compressor probably bad. Best to have an ac tech test your system. But you can Look on top of it and on top of anything directly behind it such as wire harnesses, valve covers, ect. Do you see shiny metal flacks? If so either the compressor or fan motor at radiator is bad. Does it cool while driving at highway speeds? If so then it's the fan motor bad.

Turn your car on. Turn your AC on. Open your hood, if the pulley is grinding, shooting sparks, or there is any smell of metal on metal or even rubber burning, it is your AC pulley. You can bypass this pulley by replacing the old serp belt with a shorter one, going around the pulley. You won't have AC, but it will get rid of the grind and not effect the way the car runs. If there is tension on that unit without a bypass, you are adding resistance to the entire motor, the serp belt needing to work extra hard to pull the AC. Bypass or get it looked at, don't want to risk further damage to your car.
