Truck falters and hesitates

Asked by Horsetraveler Jul 30, 2018 at 11:13 AM about the 2003 Dodge RAM 2500 SLT Quad Cab RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My '03 Ram 2500 manual diesel is hesitating and faltering when I drive it.
Sometimes, as I'm accelerating and going through the gears, it will falter like
it isn't getting fuel. Other times, when I'm cruising down the interstate, it will
hesitate for a second and then surge forward, hesitate and surge. The truck
sat for several weeks over the winter (temp never below single digits). The
problem started when I began driving it again consistently in the spring. I
have changed the fuel filter twice (very dirty first time and somewhat dirty
less than a month later) and changed the (very dirty) air filter.  Could this be
debris in my fuel tank? Or in the lift pump which was installed in 2010? I can't
seem to get anyone with a clue to look at it.
Thanks, Patti

Patti I have an '06 cummins 5.9 that has done the same thing twice recently. I changed fuel filter and fixed it. A couple weeks later it did it again. I fueled up with Shell diesel and that fixed it. I was under half tank when it started and about a quarter when I fueled. Before the 1st time, I had fueled at Murphy in Conway SC. Fueled there before with no problem but not again. Just ran the Shell fuel down to quarter tank with no problems. I added some of the Kleen Diesel in the white bottle from Advance right after I got the Shell fuel. I would try that. If it is slime in the tank fueling with the KD may help dilute it. I didn't change fuel filter the 2nd time. Hope this helps
