Having a problem charging my battery on my Dodge Hemi PickUp

Asked by newyorkjoe Oct 31, 2015 at 03:23 PM about the 2006 Dodge RAM 2500 SLT Mega Cab RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My truck is not used that often, and I keep finding my battery dead.  When I hook up the battery charger, the check light goes on.  I've returned the battery to dealer four times and it was replaced.  Doing some investigation, if I remove the + wire the charger works perfectly.  Have gone through all the lights and controls without luck.  Planning to bring to dealer.  Not sure if I have a problem, or if truck needs to be started more often.  Point: Battery goes to completely dead.

You probably do have a drain and you could install a cut off switch to isolate the battery when your truck sits for extended periods. Also get a battery tender which is a low amperage battery maintenance charger. I would also check and make sure the charger you have is any good. Electronic chargers are notorious for not wanted to charge when an old fashioned analog charger does just fine.

Went to the dealer today. He confirmed the following and gave the suggestions. 1) You cannot charge a battery on the Dodge. (this is a fact expressed from other questions) You can charge a battery if you remove a cable, suggested negative terminal. 2) Just turning the motor on idle will not charge a battery. Suggested to drive 10 miles at least twice a week to charge battery, if truck is not in use. 3) battery will go dead if left unattended for about two weeks or more. thank you all for your input. It was very helpful.
