Lots of possibilities but It's simple to clean the MAF sensor on an older car it should be done anyways. along with new HEGO's ...Scan the vehicle for DTC codes too. Check a Mercedes forum for info

I would be looking at cleaning the injectors. A very common problem - especially if you have been running other than Tier 1 fuel. Try Chevron or similar top quality cleaners for a few tankfuls. That will normally fix the problem quickly. You will be able to feel the difference.
