My reserve fuel icon is flashing and the dash reads check gas cap see owners manual. The cap was loose, I tightened it but that didn't make the warning go away. What is the matter?

also, it may take a couple of drive cycles to have it go away by itself

I drove it home, parked and turned it off. Later when I started the car, everything was fine. I read in the manual that this message occurs when the gas cap is off and the car is driven. Of course, I had no idea that the gas cap was off.
