Does the spring need to be compressed when replacing the control arm on a 1997 VW Cabrio?

if your referring to the regular control arms then no but in the main control arms situation it helps a little as it is a pain to put the main shock back up sometimes.
there is only one lower control arm on the 1997 vw cabrio. So, should the spring need to be compressed or can it be completed without touch the spring? Thanks
if its the lower wish bone then no you don't need to depress the spring. here is the best video i could find tha shows the whole process. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwiwbCxJO3s
