Hello Lanay, there are some plastic components to the shift linkage you should be inspecting. When they wear out, it can be quite a loose feeling in the shifter and may cause this problem. Part is under $20. Fix the easy stuff first. I wish I had a better picture for you. I've circled the two plastic-ended rods.

I always start with the easy stuff first. My 86 Jetta ate up the shift rod plastic ends and it caused a very sloppy shifter feel. Examine the linkage assembly as a whole...look for obvious worn parts...feel around for loose fasteners. It takes a bit of detective work.

My 93 vw cabriolet feels like the stick shift is loose when I have it in neutral or in any gear except reverse an when im driving I have to carefully shift in to gear or it kinda feels like it doesn't wont to go in to gear or it kinda grinds a lil,so my question is hw do u tighten the shifter or what else could be the problem.? 3 Answers

my cabriolet is strange. I runs great most of the time. Once in a while while driving the rpms fall below 10k and the car bogs down. It take about 45 seconds to get to 45 mph from a stop. When this happens I drive home and park the car. Upon the next start up everything is working fine. I have a new fuel filter, plugs air filter,wires, no vaccum leaks.
