No acceleration in my beetle

Asked by Ismadea Dec 09, 2016 at 07:44 PM about the 1999 Volkswagen Beetle 2 Dr GLS Hatchback

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My car slowly started losing force in
asmatter of 1 month, I had to push the gas
all the way down to get it to move.  The
check engine light is on and the codes are
P0422, P1128, P0134, P0171, P0102. I was
sure it was the catalytic converter so I
disconnected the catalytic converter but car
still did not move.

lol when you say disconnect do you mean physically removed it from the car? Vw wagons run on alot of vacuum and back pressure from parts including the catalytic converter. Most people say when you have alot of codes you work from the the first one and work your way down the list. But in all honestly you work from the top of he engine process and work your way back. Your first step should be Replacing any dirty air filters, Clean your maf and any sensors to the throttle body and maybe even using the maf cleaner on your throttle body and use a paper towel to clean up any black stuff on it. Next would be to remove all the spark plugs and replace them especialy if they have not been done in over 50,000 km (replace with top of the line bosch plugs only 4 point bosch plugs). check the cylinders for signs of carbon deposit build up while the plugs are out if you can't see in try one of those mechanic cams if you don;'t have that then don't bother with it. Next you will want to check the fuel filter and tank replace hte filter if it has not been replaced in over 2-3 years especialy so if you use anything less the high tess premium gas. Make sure the fuel filter when you turn the key hums a steady beat. Next move on to vacuum, replace any frayed or old vacuum lines with new line (cheaply bought from Volkswagen or Audi service center.) Replace the crank case hoses especially if they are original they will likely be completely clogged in spots. once you have finished all that see if it runs better. if it does not replace the oxygen sensors and if it still runns the same you may just have to get a catyletic converter. Especially if it heats up to hot.

when your saying pulling do you mean to the left the right ? straight ahead ... :p the gas peddle is to make it pull forward tho :P if the car pulls to one side tho it would be best to check the control arms and alignment and the brakes as well to make sure they are not siezed on one side. other things can be the axle and tires .
