I have a 2007 PT Cruiser when I push the gas pedal it won't go no more then 40 mph. The RPM goes high.

I can only assume it is automatic,tranny,check the trainsmission fluid,may just be low,or tranny might be going out.

Sounds like you are in "Limp Mode" which lets you still drive your car but only in reverse or 2nd gear. Did your yellow check engine light come on? Could be transmission or many other problems like slipped timing belt. How many miles on car? Also, Autozone or O'Reilly's will check your check engine codes for free. You can google your code to get an idea of what might be wrong.

Oh, and don't drive fast and over-rev the engine! Limp mode is trying to minimize potential damage. Just be happy with 30 mph or so.
