1999 Saturn SL1

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Hi I was going up a steep hill and the car started making a kinda low sputter sound with a couple ting, ting sounds. It lost power and I couldn't continue going up hill. I turned around to head down and if I gave it gas it didn't have hardly any power. Going down hill the transmission seemed to be working fine with the speed increase because of going down hill but the gas didn't have power.

The pinging is preignition/detonation. It could be caused by a variety of reasons, but going uphill then experiencing the problem leads me to think that the fuel pump is on its last leg.
