I don't really have enough information when this happens. First have the linkage checked. It may be lose or a bolt may have dropped out and the slides are out of alignment. When does this occur and into what gear are you shifting into when this happens? I am assuming this is a standard transmission? How do you know it is trying to go into reverse?

Your revers lock out selinoid is not working. You can still put it in revers, but you have to press harder on the shifter. You will be pressing the selinoid in. Normaly wile you are in nutral and not moving the selinoid would be ingaged. Its a safty. You dont want to put it in rev wile going forward.

Oh, the message was "won't or will not" not wants to. My bad, I thought the transmission was going into reverse as you were up shifting.
