What kind of issue am I looking at and is it an expensive one?

My X type 3.0 2004 heat won't blow hot and the defrost gets hot for just a sec then it gets
cold.

sounds like something wrong with the climate control system- you will learn to appreciate the good old days when we could get heat just by pulling a lever attached to a cable- that's why they are called "The Good Old Days"
