What is causing the Check engine light to come on

don't remember the "code numbers" but they were: random misfire and cam shaft sensor fail. There is no cam shaft sensor of if there is it is built into the DIC.
where is it located on the engine?
Tom, did you locate the "cam sensor" on the 2.3t engine? I cannot find it anywhere.
It seems you address the major components to why a check engine light would come on without anything major happening. A check engine light will come on with a loose or damaged gas cap. The Emission Control System will detect "vapors" leaking out and signal the check engine light to come on. More often than not this turns out to be the issue. Yep a $10 gas cap. If that is not the issue then you will have to get the code. You can unplug fuse 17 and leave it out for 2-5 minutes and that will reset the Engine Management System if it returns then it also possible a code is frozen in the freeze frame of the computer and you will need a OCD reader that can clear the freeze frame. Most major repair facilities will have the right OCD. Smaller garages usually don't carry it because they are expensive as the other OCD can reset odometers ect. If you are in Canada (Canadian Tire) if you are in the USA any large chain repair facility
