Hello.I am planning on buying a family's friend 1998 acura TL 3.2 car.She told me engine and tranny is running fine,but it can't pass smog test in california.Any ideas what could be the problems and what are the possible costs?

horrible costs for nothing wrong! get out of california!!!!!!! the utter ridiculousness of all the regulation you have to deal with is unfathomable to the rest of the country!
I would not pay more than $200 for an old car that cannot pass smog inspection. Costs? Could range from $100 for a tune up to $5,000 + for a new engine with new smog components.

If you are determined to buy this financial black hole have the the trouble codes read and post them here. Also get a copy of any failed smog inspections to see what information is on them.
