Oil is burning and passed the piston rings, this is definitely NOT GOOD.
Blue smoke means oil burning. Could be going past the piston rings, valve guide seals or coming from somewhere else. A good diagnostic test is to run a wet and dry compression test.
Bob, didn't I just say that??? Bottom line, you need major engine work and you'll have to open the engine and your wallet. I would consider flipping into another vehicle.
Mark, just pointing out that there other areas that excessive oil in the combustion chamber come from and it is not only from the piston rings.
Bob-, I understand, but, it's still a lot of major engine work. While you have everything torn down, you might as well do everything, otherwise, it's a waste of time....In other words, do it correctly, or get another car. That's the only two choices here for the person who owns this vehicle. Personally, I would get another car.
Might be worn out, might not. We still don't know engine size or miles on the vehicle.

On 2008 with normal use and you did not run it hot or low on oil and change oil regular I would say upper end (head Parts, likely valve seals) verses lower end (Rings) which can be cheaper to fix.
