My question is if I can drive my Subaru in 2 wheel drive instead of all wheel drive for a long period of time without causing any damage?

No harm but not a good choice with winter approaching.

SOA tells folks to not drag the system around in 2WD very long as all parts are spinning anyway, so there's no real benefit in fuel eco.

40+ years of driving in Canadian winters with two wheel FWD, on paved roads and on dirt fire trails in the mountains. Never, ever got stuck or fell off a road. All it takes is experience and skill. 4WD can be a big negative on icy roads. 4WD is very good for climbing rocky, muddy, steep, off road trails.

Locked-diff and crude 4WD systems are indeed treacherous on ice,,,especially while turning, but modern AWD systems...especially RWD-based ones...are better in ALL winter conditions.
