2009 Subaru Forester Engine Shot?

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My oil drain plug failed (loosened during a drive and emptied) and within a
short drive developed a loud knocking and eventually stalling out. Local
mechanic said it was shot and needed a new engine--based on observation,
he didn't dig too deep or open it up.

Any chance it's something lesser? Only has 97k on it and hate to just let it go
for parts and lose a lot of $. Any suggestions the best way to go to lose the
least amount of money? Already leased a new car, so don't need the wheels
anymore. Thanks much!

It's toast. Advertise it on Facebook's Marketplace and Craigslist.org and get rid of it.

Similar cars with much more miles are going for between 7-9k. Any ballpark ideas of what "As-Is/parts" would be vs. used engine then sell?
