What is the cause of 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe gear not engaging when the shift is moved to Drive

Low tranny fluid , broken cable/actuator , It may be a censor on the tranny take it to a good shop if that's the case it probably need a special scanner to find the problem

Gear selector switch, transmission control wiring, stuck shift solenoids, TCM, worn out transmission. Tow it to a good transmission shop in your area, they can do stand alone testing and determine if it is the actual transmission or electronic stuff.
