Check the shift lock solenoid. Its probably bad.

TransAm77/rcemearmy: I have a similar problem in my 2006 escape - but sporadically. Sometimes I can shift into gear with no problem. Other times (and it's getting more often), I have to push and push (and keep pushing) the gear shifter button to engage. I have zero skills in this department but I'm willing to give your suggestions a try because I don't have the $800 the repairman (at the dealer) said the job would cost. Any guidance will be appreciated.

I'm sorry I'm not a big Ford guy. Don't know much about the Escape.
