what effect on engine if the timming chain is bad

If it has not broken yet just replace it with new parts. If it has not broken yet you o.k.

The 2.0L engine has a timing belt. If the belt goes bad the engine will not start. If it slipped it would throw the timing off and cause back-firing. Also IF this is a interference engine then you have the possibility of having bent valves. I would have to investigate further to know if this is an interference engine.
