Fuel Pump Replacement

Asked by sheepthechicken Nov 03, 2018 at 01:13 AM about the 2011 Hyundai Sonata GLS FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I tried searching on this site but I could not find the specific answer I was
looking for (or I did but didn't understand it).

I recently brought my 2011 Hyundai Sonata in because it had stalled and
would not restart. The shop diagnosed it and told me that they needed to
replace the fuel pump and all its associated parts and the charge would be
$1100 including tow, diagnosis, labor and the part which was about $700.

When I picked it up it died within 10 miles. Brought it back to the shop
because the repair was under warranty. They tested the fuel pump they
replaced and they said it was getting power so they'd send it to a dealership
to get it fixed. They thought it might be an electrical problem that blew the
pump.

The dealership found bent pins, I believe in the relay, which they fixed. The
shop also replaced the fuel pump under the hood without explanation or my
consent, but that is another issue :)

My question is: Would the 'bent pins' issue actually cause the fuel pump to
short out? If so would it be the tank one or the engine one?

I'm asking because the shop has given me the runaround on these repairs
and refused to give me an accurate invoice. I want to make sure the
replacement was possibly necessary.

Thanks!

I'm not aware of a fuel pump under ther hood, do you mean the fuel pressure regulator? Something sounds funny about this whole deal.

I agree. The mechanic told me that there were two "high pressure fuel pumps," the one he replaced by the tank that had the gasket/filter/etc parts that needed to be replaced with it as well as the one "under the hood." I tried searching various websites to confirm this and a few said yes there's two, a few did not. The dealership wasn't giving me a straight answer either because they didn't want to speak out of turn when they didn't actually know what the shop did or did not do.

There appears to be 2 pumps. There was a recall on the connector pins in the pump connector. I don't think the bent pins would short out a pump after all it's just a motor, the pump under the hood is mechanical and the one in the tank is electric.
