Is it a generic code from a reader? Because I don't think the OBD I & II BMW 3 series has a 1238 code at all. There's a 1138 code, for O2 sensor heater fault... that's the only thing close to it

This is the code flashed by the "check Engine" light. A local mechanic counted the flashs the same as I did. This is a 318i with M42 engine.

Sounds like it's still a OBD 1 car, so do this. It's called a stomp test. Insert key, turn to position 2 (do not start), stomp the gas pedal to the floor 5 times. Look at the CEL (check engine light) It will light up then there will be a pause (turn off), start counting the flashed after that. It will continue to flash 4 digit code sequences (if more than one fault code in memory). If only one, it will flash the same one over and over again. Give it a try.

Here's a site with list of codes http://www.pelicanparts.com/BMW/techarticles/Mult-Code_Reading/Mult-Code_Reading.htm

Matt, That is exactly what I did and it is 1238, I know that doesn't exists and I am sure I didn't read it wrong (It repeats this code). I had a mechanic get the same thing. I also called BMW dealer and they didn't know either. I noted that someone on a different website had a similar issue, but no definitive answer as yet. One person stated that it was "1238 being related to the DISA valve being removed on DASC equiped cars." but this car doesn't have a super charger. Maybe his car was a diesel. By the way, thanks very much for your time, I really appreciate it! Joe

Your welcome Joe. I know how frustrating it can get trying to figure out these electronics issues. Feel free to check out some of my video of cars I've had my my YouTube channel ViggoM35. Matt
