What is loud tapping/clicking noise coming from engine?

Just started today.  It speeds up as rpm's increase.  Will it damage engine to drive car across town to mechanic?

Noise gets louder once warm? This model is common for worn tentioners that are controlled by oil pressure and as long as the noise isnt a clunking that can be heard in all conditions exept under cruising load. Towing might be a good idea.
