Missing and backfiring
Asked by Kathy Aug 14, 2016 at 08:59 PM about the 1991 Cadillac DeVille Touring Sedan FWD
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
I have a 1991 Cadillac DeVille I've had a ton of
work done on it I got so many new parts on it it's
ridiculous what it's doing now is it will run great
and then all of a sudden it starts misfiring and
choking and if I turn it off turn it back on it runs
great again and then it'll start all over again
misfiring and choking nobody seems to know what
is wrong with this car I need some help I've got
$3,200 in new parts in this car and it's either going
to get fixed or it's going to the scrap yard

I know this may sound very basic but have you replaced the distributor cap and the assemply? The spark plug wires and the upgraded to platinum tipped plugs, and reset the timing?
The check engine light is not on and I'm not getting any codes from the computer any error codes that is
No actually I have not had the distributor replaced I had a compression check done all the cylinders came back 1:20 I had the plug wires checked they're good I don't know about the time it's got kind of a weird noise in it too like a chirping house

The distributor cap is inexpensive and very easy to DIY replace. I would guess about $50 bucks although you could probably pull one off of a junk yard Caddy, Old, or Buick with the same engine. Is it the 4L V8 or a 6?
