Adding gas treatment cleaner

I just tried to add a gas filter cleaner/treatment to my 2012 Ford Focus
and I lost it coming out the bottom.  So, how do you get that gas
cap/opening open to get it in.  I don't have any problem when I get gas.  
Completely baffled.
