2000 Doge Durango 4.7, 4x4 sport Transmission Problems

Asked by ChrisN01 Mar 31, 2016 at 01:47 PM about the 2000 Dodge Durango Sport 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

RPM guages begain jumping from 600rpm to
3000rpm on acceleration causing slipping
(poor/sluggish accelleration) and stalls at stops
leading to jerking motions just before. The right
bottom side of motor and vehicle frame were
moist with trans fluid, however transmission lines
to trans are on the opposite (drivers side) and
remain dry. Possibility is that a line directly to trans
may ruptured or a crack in the trans itself may
have cause this, but does not explain how fluid got
on the bottom passenger side of motor's headers
which caused smoking and almost a fire. I believe
that the trans line may have ruptured near or where
it connects to the trans itself. Recently I had paid
for a trans flush, gasket and filters to be replaced
after the internal trans cooler lines inside radiator
ruptured, causing a mix of radiator coolent and
trans oil. When this happen I immediately
separated trans line from radiator and bypassed it
using a external trans cooler and had it flushed. No
leak in trans pan gasket or lines to raidator are
present or could be seen. Check engine light did
not come on nor was on when this happen. Maybe
busted torque converter caused leaking? I'm not to
sure and do have knowledge of motor vehicles, but
this one has me trouble shooting what may cause
this. Has ran fine before this, shifts accordingly
until today and now is almost motionless in any
gear. Tried D, 1st, 2nd and all end in same slipping
result as well as reverse. Vehicle does start and
still has no check engine light (Does lite up when
ignitiin is set to on) on while vehicle is on. Any idea
as to why trans fluid is present on the opposite
side of trans where lines actually run? I have my
guesses, but can not determine exactly where this
leak has occurred. Any help/Response is
appreciated. My name is Chris.

Hey Chris, From 2000 to 2007 Dodge really had a problem with their Transmissions. I had a 2003 15 Passenger van which was a dodge. I had to replace the Transmission at 140k and it went out before I bought the car I believe..I think he said around 85K Most of the time the check engine goes not come on. when the Trans. has troubles..
