if head gasket bad, will check engine light come on?

I WOULD NOT ASSUME SO. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT IS ALL RELATED TO EMISSIONS SYSTEMS. MAYBE THOUGH, I GUESS.
CHECK ENGINE OIL FOR WHITE FOAMY YELLOW SUBSTANCES. THIS IS COOLANT GETTING INTO OIL SYSTEM. OVERHEATING CAN BE LOTS OF THINGS. ELECTRIC FAN NOT COMING ON, BAD THERMOSTATS, BAD HEATER CORE, BLOCKED LINES,,,ETC

why would water keep needing to be added after overheating every 30 miles or so.wheres it going?
Headgasket may be bad if you are losing coolant and it is not leaking out on the ground.
