tought to get into reverse, without going to 5th first?

Hi, there are a couple of possibles here. 1, check that the clutch is fully dis-engaging i.e wear /slipping 2, the gearshift lever may have wear / play in the reverse release mechanism, ensure that when it is operated the linkage moves correctly - I had a similar problem with a Mercedes C class which required a new gearshift lever.
