"Loose" steering wheel on 2012 Chevy Suburban

Asked by BH5662 Oct 24, 2012 at 02:11 PM about the 2012 Chevrolet Suburban 1500 LT 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

We have a 2012 Suburban with ~20k miles on it.  Recently we noticed when making some turns that the
steering wheel feels as if it's loose.  The first few times I noticed it, I actually shook the wheel to see if it was
loose - it was not.  The dealer can't find anything wrong and has not been able to replicate the sensation.  We
are really frustrated as we know there is something wrong.  Any thoughts?  Thanks

Hello BH5662, I apologize on behalf Chevrolet for what you are experiencing with your Suburban. Something you don't expect when you buy a new vehicle. I would suggest contacting another Chevy dealership for a second opinion. If you would like for me to research this issue and establish a customer service case with your dealership, I would be glad to do so. If so, I would need you to private message me your VIN, full name, contact phone number, and the involved dealership. Please email is socialmedia@gm.com. Attn: Vanessa in the subject line. I look forward to your reply. Vanessa GM Customer Service

Wow, I had a high opinion of the real GM costumer service people, but Vanessa put the points up a few. What type of tires do you have on it and what type of surface or roadway were you on? Black top with dirt or lose gravel? What speed were you traveling at the time? Slow turning or above 20 mph turning? Check and make sure the lug nuts are properly tightened or the tire pressure is correct in all tires. In the late 60s and early 70s, wheel bearing failure at that mileage was a common cause, so have that looked at also. Wide tires or off set rims will put stress beyond factory specs. After market rims? If so, are they flexing? Sometime to make them look exotic, there are structure sacrifices done that may cause flex. When turning undue torque is placed on the rim and it will flex and/or give. Electric steering assist? Make sure it is set correctly and has no over assist. Power stearing flui9d levels correct?

My 1997 gmc suburban did the exact same thing, dangerous! Fortunately, my mechanic discovered my steering actuator malfunctioned -so I asked him to remove it;) Its purpose is to assist the steering wheel, especially recovery after a turn. Now, its great
