FUEL SYSTEM

How do you know that it's the fuel system? Get the codes read at the parts store to find out what failed. Write down the code number and post it here.
A 1986 vw doesn't have a diagnostic socket or anything like it. You will need to check it step by step.
First guess, clogged CAT...there may be a test port on the exhaust manifold...a protruding tube with a cap on it. Pop the cap and see if idle improves.
Check the pump pressure and the plate on the CIS injection system maybe it's dirty or stuck. Check the fuel filter and the pressure accumulator also on the back. Under the car's left side.
CAT or injection? on a '86? what did u smoke? seems to me wrong fuel mixture in the carb or ignition out of sequence!
that is correct, scott. vw came with a mechnical injection system since 1984
Wasn't 86 Jetta CIS-E?...I had one...10% power increase over the 85 model due to the improved injection system... 100 hp out of 1.8l 8-valve...38 mpg at 60mph as well...I really like that little car.
they came with different injection in us it was called cis but i do not know the variations. in europe, they were k-jetronic, ke-jetronic, and ke2- jetronic depending on the year and car
My first thing would be to do a "tune-up"....check plugs, distributor, etc....I had a similar problem and guess what...it was new " fouled plugs"....cleaned them and it runs like a charm. Had a battery problem which caused all of the "fouling"......I presume...:>) Best wishes RCB
Fuel pump is not powering on? pump relay clicks and seems working. starts and dies with starting fluid. primary concern is the fuel pump is not powering on. what could be the issue? actual fuel pump bad? could bad fuel filter or clogged catalytic converter even cause no power to the pump?
