above the temperature gage a light appeared withich looks like a battery. Is my battery water low

First please know that BMW's are not my 'area' but in every car I know the battery icon means that your battery is not getting maintained, and by maintained I mean re-charged by the alternator. It's usually an alternator problem, but possibly a bad battery that is not accepting a charge. So yes, the possibility that the electrolytes are low but that is far down on the list.
