There is a thread at: http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.f0bb58b/618 about troubleshooting your transmission.
Make sure your transmission is full. Try to avoid backing up and this free revving in reverse, this is slipping clutch bands inside the transmission and your gonna burn reverse out. It's Not developing enough pressure on the clutch packs for enough friction to Move your vehicle. Put a new transmission filter/fluid in there and 're-torque the bands. And hope transmission isn't fried already.
I had a similar problem and expected the worse like the transmission problem which I knew I had no money to spend on so took it to a friends mechanic and checked out fine. So, I reset the computer by disconnecting the battery and made sure the trans. oil is full and when the truck is cold I would go through the gears to make sure the gears are oiled up. I haven't had any problem since. I hope its not the transmission but it might be but try it out and hope the best for you.
I drove my 2001 Dakota srt extended cad 4x4. Transmission was slipping. Came home parked, check fluids, including transfer case. Transfer case was low. Added the proper amount. Went to test drive, no reverse. neutral is now a drive gear it seems you put it in neutral if wish the gas pedal and it wants to go forward I have no reverse only Park. Can someone please help what went wrong?
