check underhood for evidence of an overheat...in "panic mode" perhaps someone put water in...and when the trip was over and the hose got mended the water was not drained out...thusly creating a partially obstructed cooling jacket (jeez I still love the air-cooled jobs)...so drain the coolant into ole' milk jugs or a five gallon barrel and take the old coolant (regardless of it's purity) to the auto parts store for recycling---you've got an obstructed block...run without the t-stat for a while to see if it still is overheating, put a new 195 t-stat in, fresh coolant w/rust inhibitor and cross your fingers it does not overheat again...you could change the Temperature switch for funzies too~
