Can't shift when engine is running

I installed a new clutch slave and master cylinder but still cannot shift into gear
when the engine is running. Before I install a new clutch disc, pressure plate
and throw-out bearing I need to make sure the system is bled adequately.
How much movement should be on the pushrod at the slave? Mine moves
only a half inch and the top third of the clutch peddle is soft.

You should have about 1/2 to 1 inch of free play in the pedal. I'm not an expert on the cavalier, however, that is the norm for just about any standard shift vehicle. If you have a travel of 1/3 of the way to the floor you are probably not releasing the clutch all the way. Make sure it is bled properly and adjusted properly.
