Is it important to have air dam on 1986 Berlinetta Camaro?

Asked by camarogirl Sep 16, 2013 at 03:41 PM about the 1986 Chevrolet Camaro Berlinetta Coupe RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Its been overheating I was told there is suppose to be an air dam in front of the radiator. I don't have one and the air in front of the radiator is very hot even with the fan on, could this be why the car is overheating? The water pump, thermostat, fan, radiator hoses all been replaced. It does have the original radiator. The radiator doesnt loose any coolant even after it overheats. How important is the air dam could it cause it to overheat bad?

The cooling fins on the outside of the radiator might be plugged/dirty. If you have air conditioning, this can only be seen or cleaned, if you tilt the radiator backwards toward the engine. I've seen this happen before on the Camaros and Firebirds.
