Try driving back and forth slowly in a straight line. Stop and try shifting. Keep trying as it may take a while.

My 04 Ranger just got stuck in 4x4low. I read the answers for an Explorer by mistake, then read these about jacking it up, and thought I would try Explorer answers anyway. It worked! I started it, put it in neutral, then 4x4low for a few seconds, then 4x4high then 4x4low, then D and the light for 4x4 went off! phew. i was worried but so far so good. THANK YOU GOOGLE and CarGurus!

Hey this was a great help reading these answers. I had to incorporate all solutions : drive backwards and forward, disconnect the battery then drive back and forth till it switched into drive. Thanks for the answers.

I had this issue on 2017 2.2 auto, it would not disengage 4x4 low, it’s so simple when you know! Stop... Put vehicle into N... Foot on brake... Turn knob back to 4x4 low... Then back to 4x4 high... Then to 2x4... Hope this helps...

Wondering if anyone has simply tried reading the proper way to shift out of 4wd low in the manual? Truck must be stopped shift transmission to neutral, while holding the break pedal select either 4×4low or 2wd and wait for the shift to take place.

These techniques worked on my Mazda b4000. Stuck 200 miles from town. Found cell phone service and found this site. It worked for me too. I had to heat the area up as it was frozen solid...but that's another story.

All good advice...I tried everything listed here and no success...Looked at the Transfer Case Control Module located behind the kick panel, passenger side forward of the door and removed the gray and black plugs to find some corrosion...Removed the module w/7mm socket and wrapped some 400 grit sandpaper around a popsicle stick and VERY GENTLY cleaned the contacts...Then a light spray of WD40 and a blow out with air...Reconnected the module and road tested...SUCCESS! Just another thing to look at guys...Good luck!

My 09 Ranger was stuck in 4x4 Low. The switch was sitting on 2H and without starting the engine I put it in Neutral and pushed the brake pedal and it went back to 2H. Thank you my friends for the info.

GuruH483Z has the answer. Tried everything that was easy - except reading the manual! To paraphrase GuruH483Z “ Truck must be stopped shift transmission to neutral, while holding the brake pedal select either 4×4low or 2wd and wait for the shift to take place”. If all else fails, read the manual!!!

So I bought this 03 Ranger 4x4, used...with no manual 3+ years ago. It has given me a problem coming out of 4wd low on a couple occasions but by fiddling around with it for a few minutes, it has always switched back to 2x4. Today, it got hung up and I couldn't get it to switch back for nothing, no matter what I did, so I got online and found this post. Read a good many of the responses and was scratching my head thinking, what does putting my foot on the break have to do with anything other than holding the vehicle in position while in neutral. That's inane I thought....but I went out and tried anyway and low and behold, it switched back to 2x4 first try. I still don't know what it has to do with anything but I guess it does so I made this response for those who might think the same thing. Just go ahead and give a try and if it doesn't work it's because all these other people don't know what they are talking about. lol

2016 Ford Ranger Wildtrack Problem, would not shift back to 2 wheel drive from 4 wheel drive. Tried doing what was suggested ie select neutral, foot on brake and wait for 4L light to go out, and it worked !! So much for useless help from Team Hutchison Ford !

The neutral and pressing the break shut my 4x4 low off! With foot brake pressed, engine OFF and then shifted to neutral and moving the switch all the way to 4x4 low. Then while doing this I moved the 2h to 4l and to 2h and the light went off. Yea!!!
