don't know where to start

Asked by Kathy Nov 09, 2018 at 10:21 PM about the 2003 Ford Taurus SES

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Was running fine and was leaving work and it wouldn't go over 35 mph and it had a bad exhaust and fuel smell. I have a bridge to go over and uphill for a lot of the way drops back to 20 mph.

Have it scanned for problem codes even if there's no "check engine" light. But it sounds like a fuel starvation problem. Fuel filters are to be changed every 30,00 miles. Could be a failing fuel pump, fuel regulator, fuel pressure sensor, etcetera. Get it somewhere for repair before it quits and then a tow truck fee.
