Automatic car stalls when shifting into gear
Asked by Jenn Jan 18, 2019 at 06:30 PM about the 2014 Nissan Altima 2.5
Question type: Maintenance & Repair
2014 Altima was running fine until I put it in park in a drive thru. When it was time to leave, shifted to drive, engine stalled out. Started right back up no problem, but anytime I shift to anything but neutral the car stalls and dies. I haven't had a single problem until this. We hooked up an OBDII and the only codes that came back were for a mass air flow sensor, which I replaced, 2 spark plugs (also replaced) and a possible tps...Before I go chasing that part down and getting installed, does anyone have any other ideas or experience with this?

Were you able to figure this out? My car is doing the same thing. Please let me know brookshoy@gmail.com
Yes, we ultimately had to replace the transmission. Turns out this was a known issue with this year and model:(
Yes and I am right now waiting for a tow truck. I start Cat everything’s seems fine and when I shift it in gear the car immediately shuts off and both the check engine light and battery light pops on. I can only put the car in neutral without it cutting off.
I have 2014 Altima sv and it stalled few time while on gear no codes. No warranty. Looks like the dealer wants to change the transmission for around $4000. I think this is my last Nissan I will buy.
The wouldn't replace the transmission but instead "repaired" it. It ran for 3 more months and is now doing the same thing. Left me in rush hour traffic.
Does anyone know for sure it’s the transmission issue? The dealer could not confirm but they said 90%.
Wow my car did this today I had to get it towed It starts but as soon as i change it to drive it stalls out
Yeah it definitely was my transmission!! Thank god I had a warranty!!! I only had to come out of pocket 200 for my deductible.
I'm going through this now. Nissan sent something in the mail last month about the transmission warranty. I don't have any extra warranty under the car I'm financing it right now. My car is a 2014 Nissan altima under at 73k. Did you all have extended warranty's under the car?
my 2013 is doing this now its sending me a few codes has anyone changed what the codes are calling for
I’m 4+ hours from and my 2013 did this just last night :( Like everyone else has commented— never any problems, no warning lights, and WOW . After it stalling in D about 5 times, I tried Ds and got pulled out but next stop a mile up the road it stalled in R. Here’s my question about what I found to be down right CRAZY; How can I check the transmission fluid with NO dipstick??? Who, what, why????
WOW!!!! I found the answer and am sooo glad to pass this info along— I’m the person from the above comment and when my car started doing this at my niece”s house 4+ hours from home it was a blessing in disguise as her neighbor is a mechanic if 46 years who was very quick to find the problem was that my car’s battery had a bad cell (the indicator of this was that the side of the battery swells out) and when he replaced the battery the problem was solved!!!! Note though that you must have to drive it for a bit before it sort of resets itself because for a little over an hour of my drive home my RPMs would surge up to around 3k and then back down to 2– drive me nuts with worry but finally leveled out. I pray that this helps someone out there.
@Guru7NPWD have you had any issues since then ???
Ugh. My 2013 has this problem too. Experienced it two weeks ago after letting it sit for months due to COVID. We eventually got gas, drove it 40 miles that day no problem. 5 days later problem occurs again. Car has 167k miles and got a new transmission at 47k miles because their CRT
My transmission went on mine so if there is a way for your to get the tranny flushed or a new one then I would. I traded my car in before the transmission fully went and a new car

This might help!! My 2013 Nissan Altima was doing the same thing. Turn on just fine, put it in gear, it would shut off. No "check engine" light. WHY? Well, it turns out my Altima does NOT LIKE cheap gas. I switched to premium unleaded no ethanol. PROBLEM SOLVED!
